For those of you who are huge Game of Thrones fans, this is the itinerary package for you. The itinerary: seeing your favourite movie scenes, from your very own Lanisters, doing the walk around the stone walls, canoeing and Mostar and Kravice Waterfalls.
Before the show Games of Thrones landed in our TV boxes on April 17th, 2011, most of us could not tell you where the little coastal country of Croatia was located. However, since the award-winning 8 seasons show entered our lives, a group of countries have experienced a dramatic spike in their tourism numbers- and one of these countries is Croatia.

Dubrovnik is located in Southern Croatia, also referred to as the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’, with a population of 42,600 habitants. The city is known for its distinctive ‘Old Town’, massive ancient stone walls surrounding the inner city, which were built in the 16th century and is one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Centres. Even with numerous wars and earthquakes, Dubrovnik managed to keep its Renaissance Sponza palace and Gothic Rector’s Palace, which are now covered with cafes, restaurants and boutiques.
I visited Dubrovnik for 4 days in 2019, in the middle of August summer heat! Ofcourse, I was only there for one thing- to see the scenes and locations of where Game of Thrones was shot. However, to my surprise, I ended up discovering much more.

I particularly enjoyed the post-noon walks through the small lanes filled with petite family-owned cafes and boutiques, and the Baroque St. Blaise Church that is confined within the limestone walls of Old Town. I also really enjoyed canoeing in the pristine turquoise Adriatic waters and tasting the Croatian delicacy at Nautika.
Dubrovnik is especially busy during the peak-season of May-September, with a number of cruise ships traveling along the mediterranean sea and a number of local and non-local crowds entering the city to swim in the Adriatic. If you don’t particularly enjoy the crowds, I would recommend visiting April or the end of September.
For the Games of Thrones tour itself, we visited “The Red Keep”, which is the Fort Lovrijenac and “King’s Landing Dock and Gates” which are the West Harbour and Pile Gate. It is surreal how similar these locations are to the locations in the episodes, which means there really wasn’t much decor setup needed! The tour guide was also fantastic, a true Game of Thrones fan- really knew all the lines to the scenes and recollected it each time we reached a new location. Overall, worth a short visit and long-weekend trip.
